What is Copy writing? As a fresh Copywriter in Saudi Arabia, where it is a rare new job title, I have been asked this question a lot! My friend Heissel once told me “The job, Copy writing, is a 1st world thinggy!” Our job is writing a copy for the purpose of advertising or marketing. You have a new product you want to sell, you will seek an advertising agency for an ad for promoting it. A lot would think a designer’s job is the important part, but believe me, it’s the whole team coming together with a concept, and executing it to attract people and buy it.
A Copy could be a lot of things. As I mentioned up there, it could be in the form of an ad, web content, blog, resume, card, brochure, postcard, biography, speech, manual, business plan, press release, presentation and even a script.
Where can you work as a copywriter? You could work in a lot of places, of course in Advertising agencies, marketing agencies, public relations, broadcasters, newspapers, magazine and book publishers. You can also work as a freelancer form home.
When writing a copy, you will be in need of a Creative Brief. A creative brief is simply collecting information about the client. You will need to answer the following questions:
- Who is your client?
- What is the product?
- Who is the target audience?
- What is the purpose of the ad?
- What is the history of previous campaigns by your client?
- Is there any strong points to focus on?
Once you have these few questions answered, you can start writing your copy with ease.
If you are considering about leading this path in your career, I would suggest visiting Writer’s Digest University. You can sign up to a lot of classes to broaden your talent. Also, as long as you have the craft of creative writing, you will enjoy being a copywriter.
