2012 doors are closing and the new year is just around the corner. For some, 2012 has been a joyful year. For others, it has been a sad year. In this special blog I am going to list some of the important joyful and sad events of 2012.

January

On the 18th, SOPA, Stop Online Piracy Act, black out became the biggest protest in the history of internet. The purpose was to damage the interne’s infrastructure.

On the 19th, a group of hackers attacked government and entertainment websites in response for shutting down Megaupload.com by the FBI for copyright reasons.

February

On the 6th, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake hits the central of Philippines causing almost 43 deaths.

On the 17th, Christian Wulff, the president of Germany, resigned for a corruption scandal!

March

On the 19th, Wendy’s takes over Burger King’s spot as the 2nd bestselling hamburger chain in the U.S.

On the 23rd, the African Union announced its intention to send soldiers for the hunt of Joseph Kony.

April

On the 9th, The Lion King overtakes The Phantom of The Opera and becomes the highest grossing Broadway show.

On the 13th, North Korea rocket launch failed, it flew for a short time then broke down and crashed into the water.

May

On the 5th, For the first time since 1970, Japan shut down its nuclear reactors leaving the country with no nuclear power.

On the 6th, Francois Hollande has been elected as the new president of France.

June

On the 6th, Archaeologists have discovered remains of an Elizabethan theater where some of Shakespeare’s plays were first preformed.

On the 24th, Muhammad Morsi has been elected as the new president of Egypt.

July

On the 5th, The tallest building in Europe (The Shard) was launched in London. It stands at 309.6 meters.

On the 25th, The 2012 Summer Olympics began.

August

On the 6th, Curiosity Rover landed on Mars.

On the 9th, Usain Bolt became the first person to win the 100m and 200m sprint in back to back Olympics.

September

On the 23rd, Iran has blocked Google as a search engine.

On the 24th, China has banned books by Japanese authors or about Japan.

October

On the 14th, Felix Baumgartner set world records for skydiving an estimated 39 kilometers reaching an estimated speed of 1,342 kilometers per hour.

On the 30th, George Lucas sold Lucasfilm and the rights of Stars Wars and Indiana Jones to Disney in a $4.05-billion deal.

November

On the 16th, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 grossed $500 million in 24 hours which marked the largest entertainment launch of the year.

On the 29th, The United Nations approved the change of Palestine’s status an observer to an observer state.

December

On the, 21st, The Mayans predictions was false, and the world did not end.

On the 21st as well, Gangnam Style by Psy hits 1 billion views on YouTube.

As the year 2012 is coming to an end, I cannot help but remember all the people who lost their lives in Syria fighting for their land and freedom. I hope 2013 will be a better year for humanity. Happy New Year.
